The need to avoid any failure

The need to avoid any failure causes perfectionism, and perfectionism causes pessimism, and pessimism robs us of our courage and enthusiasm for the job at hand.

Pessimism

Is pessimism the best way to stay safe, to hide from the vulnerability of over optimism or over confidence and avoid disappointment? This damages enthusiasm – a high price to pay.

The strength of self confidence

If initiative is the strength of self confidence, then anything that saps initiative is an enemy, e.g. Welfare benefits, end-time teachings, recalling rebukes that previous initiatives invoked.
